All M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. students must be financially supported: M.A.Sc. students receive at least $15,000/year plus tuition and fees for up to two years; Ph.D. students receive the same for up to four years. For many M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. students, this support comes from the supervisor (in the form of a Research Assistantship, or RA) and from the Department of MIE (as an MIE fellowship).
Students who hold an NSERC or OGS scholarship instead receive a top-up award, as follows:
| scholarship | RA | MIE fellowship |
| NSERC PGS-M, CGS-M, PGS-D | $5,000 | $5,000 |
| OGS | $4,000 | $6,000 |
Note that as of 2011/12, NSERC and OGS scholarship holders are no longer guaranteed TA positions, and so must apply for these if interested.
In the early fall of each year, we will distribute instructions on how to apply to NSERC and OGS. Students who hold other external scholarships (e.g. from another country, or from other funding agencies) may also receive additional funds to top-up their funding to at least the minimum level.
Finally, graduate students are eligible to apply for the following other sources of funding:
All full-time graduate students (including M.Eng. students) are eligible to apply for Teaching Assistant (TA) positions. The money earned is usually on top of other funding.
The Department offers a number of fellowships endowed by generous alumni and friends of the Department of MIE, that are awarded annually. Fellowships may be offered on top of other funding, or may replace a portion of the guaranteed financial support.
The Department of MIE distributes up to 24 travel grants per year, to encourage conference travel by supporting the conference-related expenses of MIE graduate students.
All M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. students receive financial support for the duration of their programs.
M.Eng. students can specialize in Energy Studies, Healthcare Engineering, and Computational Mechanics in Design.
Students can specialize in collaborative programs including Biomedical, Environmental and Knowledge Media Design.
The M.Eng. program in Design and Manufacturing offers working engineers the opportunity to study part-time towards an industrially-oriented graduate degree.
