The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering offers opportunities to pursue research-based graduate work (M.A.Sc. and Ph.D.) as well as professional Master's degrees (M.Eng. and M.Eng. in Design and Manufacturing). On this page you'll find an overview of these programs; on subsequent pages (accessed via the links on the left) you'll find more detailed information on requirements and the cost of tuition, and instructions on how and when to apply.
M.A.Sc. applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree with high academic standing from a recognized university. Ph.D. applicants will normally hold a Master's degree, although M.A.Sc. students enrolled in MIE can apply to fast-track into the Ph.D. program before completing the M.A.Sc. degree requirements.
Admission into the M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. programs is extremely competitive: we can only offer admission to a small fraction of applicants. This is because M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. students must be funded, either by external scholarships or by a professor's research funds. As a result, M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. applicants are strongly encouraged to contact professors with whom they would like to work, either before or after submitting an application. Without funding, we cannot offer admission.
New as of September, 2012, the Department of MIE also offers a flex-time Ph.D. option, for students who wish to pursue a Ph.D. while continuing to work. Application instructions for the flex-time program are described here.
The professional Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) course-based program is described here, and offers optional certificate programs that allow students to specialize in certain areas. M.Eng. students do not receive funding.
International applications are welcome, but applicants should be aware that the tuition is expensive. International applicants who do not satisfy the English Language Proficiency requirement may wish to consider the International Foundation Program.
Learn about this program at www.admicanada.com. The M.Eng. program in Design and Manufacturing is administered by ADMI, the Advanced Design and Manufacturing Institute, on behalf of a group of four Ontario universities. The program is available to Canadian citizens and permanent residents only. Applications are accepted at any time. The first step is to submit a preliminary application from the ADMI website.
