MIE Accounts

Can I have a computer account on the MIE computing system?

The Mechanical and Industrial Engineering computing system is a research network. All faculty members, graduate students with supervisor and researchers in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering can have MIE accounts for research purposes. Students require authorization from their supervisor.

For course-related work, students can use the Engineering Computing Facility (ECF) network. Undergraduate students automatically get accounts on ECF when they register. Other students should apply for course accounts in the ECF office.

To apply for a MIE account, fill in the Computer Account Request form and return it, signed by your supervisor, to the Computing Services office. If approved, the account will be activated within a couple of days.

Can I have an e-mail account? What is my e-mail address?

When your MIE account is activated, you automatically get an e-mail address such as username@mie.utoronto.ca where "username" is the login name given in the Computer Account Request form. Example: jsmith@mie.utoronto.ca

Alternatively, all UofT students and staff can also have an institutional e-mail account with the Information Commons UTORmail service. Apply on-line at www.mail.utoronto.ca or go to the Robarts or Engineering library to have your UTORmail account activated. Your UTORmail e-mail address usually has the form firstname.lastname@utoronto.ca

Please note that MIE and UTORmail are independent e-mail systems. If you apply for both, you should remember to check your e-mail on both systems, or you can arrange to have all e-mails from one system automatically forwarded to the other.

What computers/terminals can I use?

Students would use the computing facilities available in their research labs. Check with your supervisor or with other students in your lab for details.

For course work, the ECF network has several computer rooms with access to their Linux and PC networks. The Information Commons also has PCs for general use around campus, including the Public Access Facility at the Robarts Library.

What are the settings for MIE e-mail (POP, IMAP, SMTP)?

See here for MIE email settings.

How long can I keep my account?

For as long as you are in the department and your supervisor sponsors your account. After you graduate or leave the department, your supervisor can have your account closed at any time, without warning. It is the responsability of the users to discuss with their supervisor if the account is needed after leaving the department, e.g., to finalize publications or research projects. Once an account has been closed, it can only be reopened with permission of the supervisor.
