On October 25, the Ron Venter Design Studio officially opened in the Myhal Centre for Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship. Professor Emeritus Ron Venter has been a driving force in the creation of the Myhal Centre, and a valued member of U of T Engineering and the University since he joined in 1975. Before Carla Baptista left MIE to begin a new journey with the Faculty of Architecture, the U of T Engineering community came together to thank her for the eight years of service in MIE.

The search for an undergraduate counsellor is ongoing; the department will update all students as soon as the search is completed.
How do you build a successful startup so early in your career? All MIE students are invited to learn about Huda Idrees' (IndE 1T3) entrepreneurial journey at our next Industry Spotlight Series on November 12 from 12 - 2 pm in GB 202. Idrees is the founder and CEO of Dot Health, as well as a recent recipient of the Engineering Alumni Network's Early Career Award.
The Human Factors Interest Group invites you to this year’s Inter-University Workshop (IUW) on Saturday, November 17 in Toronto! IUW is an annual conference that brings together over 100 human factors, UX design and human-computer interaction students and professors from multiple universities for a day of research presentations, networking, and community building.

Vector Scholarships in Artificial Intelligence for 2018-2019

These merit-based awards recognize top candidates pursuing studies in a recognized AI-related master’s program or an individualized study path that is demonstrably AI-focused. Meritorious candidates must be nominated by their program; they cannot apply directly. MEng and MASc can apply. Students must submit the following documents to the MIE Graduate Office by November 14 (4 PM) for consideration. Submit the documents by email: gradoffice@mie.utoronto.ca and indicate "Application for Vector Scholarships in Artificial Intelligence - < student name > < degree program >" in the email subject line.

Vector Postgraduate Affiliates Program 2018-2019

Graduate students (MSc, PhD) and post-doctoral fellows conducting research on novel methods or applications in the area of deep learning or other areas in machine learning are invited to apply. All applicants must be affiliated with an institution in Ontario. In order to maintain your status as a Postgraduate Affiliate, you must continue to meet this eligibility criteria. Application submission: November 22. Letters of Recommendation: November 30.

UT-IMDI Summer 2019 Sponsored and Collaborative Projects – Paid, Apply by November 30

The University of Toronto Institute for Multidisciplinary Design and Innovation (UT-IMDI) provides MIE undergrad and MEng students with unique and excellent opportunities to work on a real life project at companies such as Bombardier Aerospace, Pratt and Whitney Canada, Bell Mobility and many others. Through working on these company projects, students not only apply their knowledge learned in the classroom and also develop and strengthen their networking ties with industry which will greatly benefit students’ future careers.

2019 John Charles Polyani Prizes

To honour the achievement of John Charles Polanyi, recipient of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the Ontario Government established a fund to provide John Charles Polanyi Prizes annually to up to five outstanding researchers or scholars who are in the early stages of their career and at Ontario universities. The prizes, each which is currently valued at $20,000, will be conferred in the fall of 2019. They are available in the areas of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Economic Science, broadly defined.

Value/Duration: $20,000
Level of Study: Postdoctoral or has faculty appointment
Required Legal Status: Ontario resident
Results: November 2019 by agency

Society of Women Engineers: Toronto Workshop on November 17
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and the SWE Toronto affiliate, in partnership with Engineers Canada and Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE), invite you to join fellow engineering students, engineering graduates and professional engineers on Saturday November 17 for an interactive day with a focus on Emotional Intelligence. This workshop will be held at Vantage Venues, 150 King St. W from 9 AM-1:30 PM and is open to all university students and professionals.

Commuter Student Meet & Greet on November 19
U of T Engineering will be hosting a Commuter Student Meet & Greet on November 19, 5-7pm in GB 202. This will be an opportunity for students to meet other commuters from their area and dinner will be served. Please help promote this event to your students.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is simply a sustainability scorecard for green buildings. Buildings can become LEED Certified as can people! The LEED Green Associate is the only professional designation to show employers and clients you have certified knowledge in the field.
