The Centre for Healthcare Engineering Celebrates 10 years
Have you contributed to a healthcare engineering-related research project, thesis or degree at U of T? Are you a faculty member or industry collaborator in a healthcare engineering field? Join us to network with fellow healthcare engineering professionals and celebrate 10 years of the Centre for Healthcare Engineering (CHE). The event takes place Monday, October 1, 5:30-8pm at the Myhal Centre for Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Dr. Woo Hon Fai Innovation Floor (8th floor). RSVP here.


Prof. James Luedtke (University of Wisconsin-Madison) will speak about "Optimizing Truck Dispatching Decisions in Open-pit Mining using Integer Programming." Join us for the second seminar in MIE's new Operations Research Seminar Series.
Prof. John S. Gero (UNC Charlotte and Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study) will speak about "Measuring the Minds and Brains of Designers When Using Different Design Methods" in a collaborative seminar between PsychEng and MIE's new Research in Focus series.
Fourth Year students and M.Eng students are invited to hear from U of T alumni Alvin Mok and Rainbow Chik, representing Orbis Investment Management, how big data is changing the way money is invested worldwide. Lunch will be provided. Be sure to RSVP online.

Awards & Funding

PhD student Sai Wang wins Best Poster Award at SPE FOAMS 2018
Congratulations to Sai Wang, who was awarded Best Poster Award by the Society of Plastics Engineers at the International Conference on Advances in Foam Materials & Technology (FOAMS) 2018 in Montreal, September 13-14, 2018. Sai's work is supervised by Prof. Chul B. Park.

Alumni Fiona Tran, Dr. Antony Hilliard and Prof. Greg Jamieson win Best EID Article Award
Their 2017 Ergonomics in Design article, "Keeping the Lights On Across the Continent," won this year's Best Article Award. Their contribution will be recognized during the Opening Plenary Session at the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Annual Meeting on October 2 in Philadelphia.

2019 Adel S. Sedra Distinguished Graduate Award

In honour of the significant contribution made by Professor Adel S. Sedra, former Vice President and Provost, to the University of Toronto, the University of Toronto Alumni Association (UTAA) has established this award to recognize a doctoral student who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and extracurricular leadership. Submission deadline: November 15, 2018 (4:30pm). Value/Duration: Up to $25,000 for 1 year; finalists receive $1000 each. Level of Study: Doctoral - second or third year. Required Legal Status: Domestic or International. Results: Communicated by SGS in late January.

AMIGAS launches Student Seminar Series
AMIGAS and the Department of MIE are happy to announce the launch of the Student Seminar Series to showcase the breadth of research done by our graduate students. Faculty, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students are invited to our inaugural seminar on September 26th from 12-1 pm in MC331. We have two great speakers lined up for you. From Mechanical Engineering, Tianqi Xu will present "UV-lithography-based 3D encoding of magnetic domains in planar flexible materials for microrobotics." From Industrial Engineering, Bahar Memarian will present "Interface design for learning outcomes assessment." Pizza will be served for lunch.
