The challenge: present the best business plan for starting a company in the biomedical field
- in just 20 minutes or less, in front of an industry panel. Four graduate students, including MIE grad students Tian Kong and Shashi Malladi - who took second and fourth place, respectively -  competed in this year's Small Talks event, which was sponsored by U of T alumnus Dr. Tom Ewart, and hosted by Professor Axel Guenther's Centre for Microfluidics Systems. Xinyu Liu joined MIE on September 1 as an Associate Professor. Prior to joining the department, he was an Associate Professor and the Canada Research Chair in Microfluidics and BioMEMS (tier II) at McGill University.
Jeethendra Anayat joined MIE on August 21 as a Student Workshop Machinist in the Machine Shop.
UT-IMDI recently held its Final Project Presentations, where 25 students showcased their summer projects in front of Director, Professor Kamran Behdinan, as well as industry clients and supervisors. View photos.


MIE Seminar Series: Seminar Info Session

This year, our seminar content will be presented to students and administered for the first time through Top Hat, which we hope gives the speaker and students a greater chance to interact and engage during the talk. We encourage graduate students to attend this information session hosted by Professor Edmond Young to learn more about Top Hat and to get your seminar questions answered before the seminar series begins the following week. The Fall schedule for the seminar series is now available.


2018 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC): deadline September 15
Candidates must complete the entire application process by Friday, September 15, 2017 to be eligible for consideration, this includes: 1) the online submission of a completed Vanier CGS application via ResearchNet;
and, 2) a printed, hard copy submission of the entire application including all original official transcripts (foreign transcripts submitted by the applicant should be accompanied by a grade legend) to David Duong, MIE Graduate Office, MC 108, by September 15, 2017 at 4 p.m. Students are strongly encouraged to complete the "Identify Referee" task on ResearchNet well in advance as referee assessments must be completed and submitted by the referee before the student can complete the submission process.

University of Toronto Industry Insights (UTII) is now accepting applications for the following positions: Director of Education(s); Director of Finance(s); and, Director of Communication(s). UTII is a student initiative that holds lectures to educate students on industry sectors. Canadian Conference on Student Leadership
The CCSL brings together post-secondary student leaders from across the country and the world to share ideas, become inspired, and leave determined to make a difference on their campuses and in their communities. The 2017 conference will run from November 23-25 in Vancouver. This year's theme is Start With Why.

Peer Mentorship Training

U of T Student Life will be hosting two days of Mentorship Foundations Training on St. George Campus. New Peer Mentors who have not participated in Mentorship Foundations Training can attend on Saturday, September 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost for these one day sessions is $10 per student and it is charged back to the program, you will be invoiced after the training.
