Graduate Studies

Master Tuition Bursary for 2009-10
Tuition fee bursaries are awarded to master's students who still have a small amount of work outstanding. These students will have registered full-time from the beginning of their programs and their minimum period of registration (i.e. program length) will have ended by or before either August or December of current year. Students receiving tuition fee bursaries will not be eligible for fellowships, scholarships and other awards. Essentially the bursary allows the recipient to pay the part-time fee for one term.

Student Affairs

MIE Students to Attend the 2009 ASME Student Design Competition Final
team In March 2009, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) U of T Student Section sent two teams to participate in the 2009 Student Design Competition, at the District B Student Professional Development (SPD) Conference. One of the U of T student teams finished first in the district level and was then invited to participate in the final competition at the 2009 International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition (IMECE) in Florida this November.

This year’s student design competition, Mars Rocks!, had each team design and build a vehicle to navigate through various obstacles, retrieve rocks, and bring them back to a designated spot. Scores were assigned based on several criteria: the amount of time it took for the vehicle to retrieve all of the rocks, the weight and power consumption of the vehicle, and the accuracy of the rocks' placement in the designated spot. The team’s vehicle named i86 scored the highest out of 14 competitors in the district competition. The team is currently refining the design to reduce the vehicle’s weight and increase the speed in preparation for the upcoming final.

robot Please feel free to contact i86 team leader Jacky Lau with any questions or comments.

3rd Annual MIE Ace the Interview Event
On Wednesday November 11 the MIE Department and the Leaders of Tomorrow program will be hosting our 3rd annual Ace the Interview Event. Ace the Interview is an event to aid current students in their future career search. Mechanical and Industrial Engineering alumni will conduct a series of mock interviews with students and provide feedback on the student’s performance. Students rotate through a number of short interviews, giving them the opportunity to meet multiple alumni. The event will begin and end with a networking reception where students and alumni can connect over refreshments. Over 50 students have already registered to have their interview skills tested by our alumni!

Questions about this event can be directed to Shannon Osborne.

Leaders of Tomorrow Globalization Workshop
The MIE Leaders of Tomorrow group is hosting a workshop on Globalization and Global Engineering on November 13 from 12:00 to 1:00 PM. Facilitating the session will be Professor Murray Metcalfe (MIE 7T7), Professor of Globalization in the Faculty's new Centre for Global Engineering.

To get us thinking about how engineers can use their skills and education to solve global problems, Professor Metcalfe will guide us through two case studies on the companies below. These cases combine aspects of entrepreneurship, finance, engineering, global thinking and more. This workshop is not to be missed by anyone wishing to see how their ideas can reach past our own borders, or how thinking globally can change a business.

D Light Design: D-light is a company which focuses on making affordable lighting using LED technologies. The company was formed by graduates from Stanford University. Professor Metcalfe will show us how they are thinking globally with their products and how they entered the Indian market.

Suzlon: Suzlon is an Indian manufacturer of wind turbines (#3 in the world). Professor Metcalfe will show us how the company was formed (a family of textile makers decided to start building wind turbines) and how they grew to become a multinational company.

Session Details:
Date: Friday, November 13
Time: 12:00 to 1:00 PM
Location: BA 2195
Food: a light lunch will be provided

Please RSVP to Shannon Osborne by Wednesday November 11.
All students are welcome, but we would appreciate registrations so we know how much food we need to order (yes, free food!).

U of T Engineering Chinese Club Presents:
PEY & SUMMER INTERNSHIP FORUM

Are you going to be one of the 55% of students who will go on PEY, or the other 45% that will not? How do you decide if your dream job is really the one that’s right for you? ECC presents its annual PEY & Summer Internship Forum.

Mark it on your calendar:
Date: November 12
Time: 6:00 to 8:00 PM
Location: SF1105 The Blue Room

We will explore the advantages and disadvantages of both options and many more career-related topics to help you make your decision, one that will benefit YOUR career and one that will make YOU happy. Our speakers will EDUCATE, MOTIVATE and INSPIRE. They are your peers; they come from a wide range of the spectrum; they can relate to everything you are going through; yet they are professionals with amazing credentials who have held PEY/Summer positions with industry leaders and can share their insider tips on what it is like to work with these companies, as well as how to secure and excel on such a position.

What to expect?
There will be 7 speakers from different backgrounds that will each talk about what they got out of their PEY experience. They will then join the panel discussions to share their point of view on a range of topics that are relevant to most students. At the end you are free to ask questions and our speakers will be happy to answer them.

Announcement

U of T Student Delegation to Attend the
UN Framework Convention on Climate Change

A delegation of twelve students from the University of Toronto will be attending the 15th annual conference held by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This historic event will aim to essentially map out our common climate future by trying to forge a new global agreement for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions beyond Kyoto, which expires in 2012. In advance of the climate negotiations, the delegation will hold events for the month of November to both inform and engage the U of T community and Canada.

The first event will be held on November 12 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM in MC 102 and will be a panel discussion featuring an impressive group of professors and alumni who will discuss climate change: the science, myths, policy, outcomes and the role of engineers.

A YouTube campaign is also being initiated where individual voices can be combined into a common movement. Canadians are asked to submit a short video of what they would like Canada to do in Copenhagen.
