NSERC Eligibility
The internal deadline is Wednesday, October 21st; NSERC's deadline is October 25th. Please forward a signed RIS form and submit the application on line (if you have not done so) on the 21st. Scan and e-mail the completed and signed form or deliver it in person at the address below.

Research Services will not be reviewing applications. All submitted applications appearing online will be forwarded to NSERC starting October 21st.

Include any additional documentation required to support eligibility to apply to NSERC (i.e., letter of appointment for adjunct and non-tenured faculty members and, where applicable, the NSERC Form 100 signed Appendices B and/or C) attached to the RIS form. Refer to the attached eligibility table for more information.

If the lead UofT applicants have any co-applicants on their grant applications, Research Services will only check the eligibility of the UofT co-PIs. If they have co-applicants from other universities/institutions, attach a signed copy of Form 101 page 2 (co-applicant's page), showing their signature(s) and their university representatives, to the applicants' RIS forms.

If a UofT researcher is a co-applicant on another university's application, submit an RIS form and Form 101 page 2 for the UofT Representative's signature. The UofT researcher is responsible for sending this to the lead university.

Student Affairs

Experience the joy of UTFIRST!
The Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering will be continuing its mentorship program this year to help high schools in the Greater Toronto Area participate in this year's "FIRST Robotics" competition. This highly successful annual event has been running for 19 years, and over 100,000 high school students have participated from across North America.

In this competition, teams of high school students, sponsored and assisted by local companies and volunteers, design, assemble, and test a robot capable of performing a specified task in competition with other teams. Skills in mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering are developed.

The Faculty is looking for undergraduate and graduate mentors to help high-school students in this year's build season. Over the past three years the program has worked with 13 schools and had over 70 mentors; however, this year we are looking to expand the program and help more high schools. We are looking for a commitment of a couple of hours per week in January and February. Please note that you do NOT need to have a robotics background to help.

If you are interested in joining the UTFIRST Mentorship program please email patricia@mie.utoronto.ca Click here for more information and sign. http://utfirst.mie.utoronto.ca/ For those who have experienced the excitement of FIRST in high school: continue the thrill in university, and for those who have not: come discover the energy of FIRST.

Take Our Grade 9 Kids to Work Day November 4, 2009
On Wednesday, November 4th, thousands of Grade 9 students across Canada will be taking part in the National Take our Kids to Work Day. While the University does not formally participate in this program, we are supportive of this initiative and are aware that a number of staff will bring their Grade 9 children to work on this day.

To ensure that students participating in the program have an experience that is both educational and safe, staff are reminded to discuss their involvement in this day with managers prior to November 4th. Managers should conduct a safety assessment of relevant work areas when considering requests from staff to bring their children to work.

Both managers and staff are asked click here to review the University of Toronto Environmental Health & Safety's guidelines for job shadowing prior to bringing a Grade 9 student to the University. The EHS guidelines provide important information for the safety of children who are visiting the University for formal job shadowing events and other occasions.

Take Our Grade 9 Kids to Work Day is a local school board initiated event, and students may have a paper or assignment to submit to their teacher after they participate in the day. Click here for more information on this event.

Should you have any questions, or require further information about job-shadowing, please contact Francesca Dobbin.
