Research Activities

Invited Seminar
“Bottom-up” Self-Assembly of Nano-Enabled Flexible MEMS/Electronics

Invited Speaker: Prof. Tianhong Cui, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, University of Minnesota

Time: 3:10pm-4:00pm

Date: Friday, Sept. 11

Location: CCBR Red Room, Terrence Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research (CCBR)
160 College Street

This talk will present the combination of “bottom-up" layer-by-layer (LbL) nano self-assembly and “top-down” micromanufacturing techniques for MEMS and electronics for biomedical applications. With nano self-assembly and surface micromachining, highly flexible nanoparticle-based cantilever platform for micro sensing and actuation was fabricated successfully. For flexible electronics devices, self-assembled silica nanoparticle thin film acted as the dielectric layer for field-effect transistors. Nanoparticle- and carbon nanotube-based field-effect transistors with embedded self-assembled films as dielectric and active layers were fabricated and characterized successfully as well. These self-assembled field-effect transistors were primarily investigated for high-performance bio-sensing applications. Click here for more information.

ECE Energy Systems Group Seminar
Professor Frederic Giraud will present, Research on piezoelectric actuators at the Laboratory of Electrical Engineering and Power Electronics, Polytechnic-Lille, France on Thursday, September 3 from 2:00pm to 3:30pm in MC331, Mechanical Engineering Building, 5 King's College Road.

IEEE Seminar
Invited by IEEE, Prof. Yu Sun will address a life sciences audience of scientists from GE Life Sciences, Omnyx, Abbott Lab, Johnson&Johnson, Siemens, and Bayer in New Brunswick, NJ on Sept. 1-2, 2009.

Awards & Recognition
Early Researcher Award 2009
Congratulations to Prof. Axel Guenther on winning the Early Researcher Award 2009 for "Microfluidic Strategies for the Assembly of Organized Materials".
Image Scientists can now shrink entire laboratories to portable, chip-based formats, and manipulate minute fluid volumes in complex microenvironments. Dr. Guenther's research team is taking advantage of the unique flow behaviour associated with such small fluid-filled spaces to create microfluidic material processors (MMPs). Similar to a central processing unit that forms the heart of todays personal computers and smartphones, MMPs are envisioned to become the Erlenmeyer flasks of the 21 century. They promise to eventually replace some of the tedious, empirical and decade-old procedures currently employed in the discovery and manufacturing colloidal nanomaterials. MMPs will further enable the bottom-up assembly of organized soft materials and may fuel breakthroughs in regenerative medicine.

Student Affairs

Volunteers Needed for 1st Year Student Tours
On Tuesday September 8th, engineering will host a series of tours to help 1st yr students learn about important services in engineering and at U of T. We are looking for faculty, staff and student volunteers to lead these tours. There will be 5 different tours routes each happening hourly from 10am- 4pm (6 tours). Each tour will be led by one staff/faculty member and one student.

Tours & Tour Stops

  1. Health and Fitness: Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, the Athletic Centre, Hart House
  2. Hooking Up @ Engineering: Engineering Computing Facilities, SF Computer Lab, Engineering and Computing Lab, Set up ECF e-mail accounts
  3. How to Pass 1st Yr: First Year Office & Admissions, Engineering Communications Office, Math Aid, Engineering Career Centre
  4. Where to Drink & Think: SF Atrium, Engineering Library, Restaurants on College, Megabytes, Multifaith Prayer Space, MedSci Café, University College JCR, Robarts (t-card office)
  5. Places & Spaces @ U of T: Koffler Student Centre (Bookstore, Learning Skills Office), New College, Sidney Smith, University College, Munk Centre

Faculty, staff and student volunteers are needed for each tour. All tours will have a script written out, we will also have reps from each of the different offices come out to speak to the group at the various stops. As a tour guide, you will be responsible for leading the group on the tour, and providing commentary along the way. Tour guides do not need to have in-depth knowledge about everything on their tour, but SHOULD have an interest in the topic. (e.g., for the health and fitness tour, if you work out at Hart House or the AC, you would be a good tour guide; if you have recommended the math aid office, you would be a good guide for the 'How to Pass 1st Year' tour).

If you are interested in volunteering please e-mail Shannon Osborne by Wednesday September 2nd at shannon@mie.utoronto.ca Please indicate the following information in your reply:
tours you are interested in helping with; your availability (10:00am-1:00pm; 1:00pm-4:00pm; 10:00am-4:00pm); and alternative availability.
