Undergraduate Student Presented at Innovation and Practices in Engineering Design and Education Conference
Sabrina Tang (IND1T1) attended a conference on Innovation and Practices in Engineering Design and Engineering Education, held at McMaster University from July 27th-29th. She presented a poster on the Collaborative Approach to Engineering Education which explored how a non-profit agency (Engineers Without Borders), practicing engineers, university faculty and staff, and undergraduate students have collaborated to develop, train, and present seminars to first- year engineering students in the Engineering Strategies and Practice Course (APS111). The Canadian Design Engineering Network (CDEN) and the Canadian Congress on Engineering Education (CCEE) organized this conference to increase discussion about strategies in teaching engineering students and best design practices. The department was pleased to sponsor Sabrina to attend this conference. |

MIE Students Attended the UnERD Competition
This year’s Undergraduate Engineering Research Day, cleverly titled UnERD, was held on, August 13, 2009 in the Bahen Centre. This event is a student-run competition open to all undergraduate students doing research with a professor or within the industry. It is a great opportunity for students to discover new and interesting research in the Faculty of Engineering. UnERD also allows students to display their research and explore that of their fellow students, through posters and presentations. This year there were 80 participants, including 3 MIE students competing in the Poster Presentations and 6 MIE students competing in the Podium Presentations. Winners will be announced in next week’s edition of the MIE Newsletter. |

Empowered Women in Engineering
The Empowered Women in Engineering group, co-chaired by two MIE students;: Natalia Lizon (INDY 0T9+PEY) and Ellen Turner (MECH 1T0), held their first workshop last Thursday, August 6. This new group will provide a supportive community at the University of Toronto where female students can feel encouraged, empowered, and strengthened during their time in the Faculty of Engineering. Through personal and professional development, self-expression, networking, and mentorship opportunities, the group will endeavour to improve the culture of the Faculty. Recently, female students in the Faculty had the privilege of hearing from UofT’s Poet in Community, Ronna Bloom and took part in her ‘About Her Life’ seminar. The session focused on identifying the unique challenges and experiences faced by women who study and work in a male-dominated field such as engineering. For more information about this group and to get on the mailing list for future events, please contact ellen.turner@utoronto.ca |
