Newsletter Editing and Maintenance
Alice McQuarrie has put in many hours and made tremendous effort to create the MIE Newsletter, improve communications within the department and increase MIE's visibility. We greatly appreciate her dedication to this ongoing initiative.

Eric Lin, an undergrad student in Prof. Jean Zu's lab, has created the newsletter template and given tremendous support in developing each issue. He is hired to maintain the newsletter development through the 2009/10 year. His effort is greatly appreciated.

We would like to thank Oscar del Rio for his technical support. Oscar has worked many hours to help launch the newsletter and keep it going.

We would also like to thank Prof. Yu Sun, MIE Communication Coordinator, who provides final editing and proofreads each issue of the Newsletter.

Pandemic Planning Update
Local, national, and international health agencies are predicting that the H1N1 influenza will be widespread this coming fall and winter. Students fall within an age group that is at higher risk for H1N1 than the typical seasonal flu. The University has brought together a number of planning groups to prepare for significant numbers of students, staff and faculty members who could potentially become ill or to have family members who are ill. Please click here for more information on these initiatives.

Student Affairs
A New Haven for Undergraduate Student Design
After extensive renovations and equipment purchases, the Undergraduate Design Workshop (UDW) in Mining Building Room 71 was reopened in Spring, 2009. In addition to space upgrades, the UDW is now stocked with a wide selection of hand and power tools as well as construction materials.
The objective of the UDW is to provide students with a safe and useful space in which to work on hands-on projects. Students are given safety training, tool-use training, and supervised workshop times. Whether they need to assemble a few pieces of wood or build a fully functional mechatronic device, the UDW provides both a learning experience and a valuable resource.

Interested faculty are encouraged to contact the UDW supervisor, Jason Bazylak at jbazylak@mie.utoronto.ca to arrange student access.
