Research Activities
Collaboration with Baycrest Center
Prof. Goldie Nejat has recently established a research collaboration with the Baycrest Center for Aging and the Brain, which will aim to develop revolutionary new robotic technologies for healthcare applications. Dr. Nejat’s team will work closely with researchers and clinicians at Baycrest, including the Rotman Research Institute, considered one of the top five brain institutes in the world, and the Kunin-Lunenfeld Applied Research Unit, to develop innovative assistive robots for pertinent healthcare applications. This interdisciplinary collaboration will provide foundational knowledge at the forefront of clinical robot technology applications. It will make a significant impact on the integration of socially assistive robots into the healthcare sector, helping to provide quality care to individuals. Using their social interaction capabilities, these robots can potentially assist in slowing cognitive impairment and improving vital signs in the elderly. The proposed research will foster the development of robots that meet the “needs” and “wants” of our growing elderly population.
Donation Received
The Autonomous Systems and Biomechatronics Laboratory, directed by Professor Goldie Nejat has received a $25,000 USD software donation from Nemesysco Ltd. The company has donated their state-of-the-art Voice Analysis Software which will be utilized by Professor Nejat’s team in their research on human-robot interactions.

MIE Video Conferencing Centre
video conferencing centre image

In 2006, Professor C. Greg Jensen, Brigham Young University, and Professor William L. Cleghorn, University of Toronto, were successful in acquiring a video conference unit at the University of Toronto through a PACE (Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education) Grant. The unit has since been employed by professors and students in the Department to enhance the communications of collaborative initiatives in teaching and research. Our students have made extensive use of video conferencing when working with students at several institutions worldwide on the design of PACE Global Vehicles.

The Tandberg Edge 95 unit in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering was the first video conference system with high definition capability at the University of Toronto. Users are able to converse live, via the internet, and share computer images, including PowerPoint and design drawings.
