Dr. Reza Bateni

The interconnect of SOFC stacks electrically and physically connects the anode of one fuel cell to the cathode of the adjacent fuel cell in the stack. The interconnect materials used for SOFC stacks must be electronically conducting, oxidation resistant, impermeable to the diffusion of gases, chemically stable in contact with fuel cell materials, and the oxide scale formed must not spall from the substrate. The interconnect material can be either ceramic or metallic, but metals are more practical, particularly for planar stacks, due to their lower material and manufacturing cost, lower processing temperature, and easier machinability.

In recent years, progress in materials and fabrication techniques has allowed for a reduction in SOFC operating temperatures to a range (650-800°C) where metallic alloys can be considered as replacement materials for the traditional ceramic interconnect materials used in high-temperature (900-1000°C) SOFC stacks. Chromia forming ferritic stainless steels are among the most promising candidates, due to their electrically conducting oxide scale, good thermal expansion matching with other cell components, and low cost. However, the formation of volatile chromium oxides and/or oxy-hydroxides at the cathode side of the cell leads to serious deterioration of the cell performance. Chromium species evaporation from the interconnect surface can be mitigated through the application of conductive protective coatings.

My research in the SOFC group at FCMML of MIE mainly focusses on developing and applying novel protective coatings on ferritic stainless steel substrates. Ferritic steel substrates are employed as the structural supports for planar solid oxide fuel cells, and different coating techniques are used to apply protective coating layers to mitigate chromium evaporation. The behavior of the coated ferritic steels is evaluated at high temperatures via a range of characterization techniques.
