Who was Haultain?

H.E.T. Haultain (born 1869, died 1961) was a civil engineering graduate at the University of Toronto. He was the first student president of the Engineering Society, and later became a professor in the School of Practical Science (now the Faculty of Engineering & Applied Science) at the University of Toronto. Haultain developed the Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer, with the assistance of Rudyard Kipling. The first iron ring ceremony took place in 1925, and this tradition has continued as graduating engineering students across Canada now participate in the ceremony.
