Spray Characterization

Spray characteristics, namely the droplet size and velocity distribution governs the specific physical outcome that is required from the spray.  In our laboratory we have a Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA) which is capable of measuring the drop size, velocity,   number density and volume flux across the spray. Our spray facility also includes a computer controlled three-dimensional traversing system, which allows the spray characterization in three dimensions. In addition, we have developed a new technique for the spray characterization based on a tomographic imaging technique. This technique allows us to determine the size distribution in the whole spray by a far-field imaging approach. We have utilized these instruments to characterize various types of sprays.  One of the extensive characterizations that was completed in our laboratory was on impinging jet sprays which was supported by Atlantic Research Corporation and Air force.
