CONFERENCE THEME |
M2D-5 is the fifth international gathering of scientists and engineers interested in the fields of engineering mechanics, design and materials engineering planned for July 24-26, 2006 in Porto, Portugal. The first conference was held in Toronto, Canada in 1996, and subsequent meetings were held in Nottingham, United Kingdom in 1998, Orlando, USA in 2000 and Nagoya, Japan in 2002. These meetings resulted from the belief that of those disciplines associated with advanced product design and manufacture, engineering mechanics and materials engineering have made the most significant advance in recent years. Important and dramatic improvements in component design can be made by the use of the latest advances in mechanics and materials. It is with this in mind that this Fifth International Conference on Mechanics and Materials in Design is organized. The purpose is to bring together scientists and engineers from the mechanics and materials communities to present their latest results and discuss new advances over a broad range of topics dealing with analytical, numerical and experimental techniques in mechanics and advances in materials’ technology. |
TOPICS OF INTEREST |
| The conference addresses the following topics: |
Intelligent Design Smart Materials and Adaptive Structures Sensors and Actuators Advanced Design Techniques Design of Ultralight Structures Impact Mechanics & Crashworthiness Micro-Electro-Mechanical System Design Autonomous Systems Distributed Design |

Novel Techniques in ManufacturingRecent Advances in Metal Forming/Cutting Integrated Computer Aided Manufacturing Neural Network & Fuzzy Logic CNC Machining of VHM Quality Assurance and Control
E-Teaching Mechanics & Materials We will accept papers that deal with novel techniques in teaching mechanics and materials to engineering students. Topics of interest include: lateral thinking, teaching of large classes, assessment, curricula, laboratories, time management, Integration of IT into the classroom, |
Case Studies We would welcome real engineering applications, case histories and case studies that involve the use of advanced materials and mechanics in the design process.

CONFERENCE VENUE |
The conference will be held in the beautiful town of Porto, Portugal. Situated on the banks of the Douro River, Porto is one of the oldest tourist destinations in Europe. Sloping steeply down towards the river with its remarkable bridges - one of them designed by Gustave Eiffel - it has been an inspiration to a variety of artists. Porto made its name over two centuries ago because of its connection with the port wine industry. Many areas in Porto, well planned and landscaped, have been dedicated to leisure, public gardens, sophisticated and attractive shopping areas and excellent Museums and Theaters, which justifies the city’s wish to be granted “World Heritage Status”. The conference will be held in the campus of the Engineering Faculty of the University of Porto, well suited for conferences in terms of facilities, transportation and proximity to hotels. |
M2D-5 BOOK OF ABSTRACTS AND PROCEEDINGS |
All abstracts of invited and contributed papers to be presented in Mechanics & Materials in Design meeting would appear in a book, and full papers in a CD-ROM, both being made available to delegates during the event. Instructions to authors are given below. |
JOURNAL PUBLICATION OF SELECTED PAPERS |
Extended versions of selected papers will be considered for publication in some of the following journals: International Journal of Mechanics and Materials in Design, International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, Engineering Failure Analysis, International Journal of Mechanical Engineering Education and the Portuguese Experimental Mechanics Journal. Discussions are continuing with several other journals. |
COMPLEMENTARY SYMPOSIA |
Individuals interested in running a Symposium on any or derivatives of the above topics should inform the conference chair of their intention as soon as possible. Upon approval, the symposium organiser will be requested to submit a summary of his/her plans with regards to the title of symposium, number of sessions required (5 papers per session), names of potential authors and any other special requirements. If you are interested in proposing the organization of one of these Symposia, please see a sample HERE |
FORMAT OF ABSTRACTS AND FULL PAPERS |
Extended abstracts must not exceed two pages and should be written in the same format as the full papers for the CD-ROM (no limitation in length for these): Paper Size: A4 Margins: Top 1st page 4,0 cm; Top other pages 3,0 cm; Bottom 2,5 cm, Left & Right 2,5 cm Font and line spacing: Times New Roman; single space Title: Capital letters, size 14, bold, centered at one column Authors Names: Size 10, centered at one column, two lines interval from title above Authors affiliation: Size 10, centered at one column, two lines interval from text below Main Text: Size 12, full justification at one column, 6 pt space after paragraph, no indentation Headings: Capital letters, size 12, bold, one line interval from text above Legends (Figs & Tables): Size 10 References: References to cited literature should be identified in the text with author(s) name(s) and year of publication (ex: Mascarenhas, 1997). Full citations should be grouped at the end of the paper and in alphabetical order of first author’s name. Always give inclusive page numbers for references to journal articles and a page range for books. Each reference must be cited in the text.
PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR ABSTRACT BY ELECTRONIC MAIL AS FILE ATTACHMENT(S) IN “WORD” FORMAT TO PROF. J.F. SILVA GOMES AT: sg@fe.up.pt In addition to the above papers, a number of topical Symposia are organized under the auspices of the International Conference on Mechanics and Materials in Design. Interested authors should contact the coordinators directly. For details about the different Symposia that are available, please see HERE |
