There are five examinations for which the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering is directly responsible. They are:
In addition, for Ph.D. candidates, annual meetings must occur every twelve months after the third year progress review meeting until the program is completed. Finally, Ph.D. candidates will present and defend their theses at an SGS Final Oral Examination not less than 8 weeks after the departmental examination.
Arrangements for all examinations will be made by the thesis supervisor, in consultation with the Graduate Coordinator. MIE graduate faculty must normally be in majority in all examination committees. Other members of the School of Graduate Studies of the University of Toronto may serve on an examination committee, subject to approval by the MIE Coordinator of Graduate Studies.
Details of departmental examinations, including:
must be submitted by the supervisor or the M.A.Sc. Student or Ph.D. Student/ Candidate to the MIE Graduate Studies Office on the Exam Request Form for approval at least ten business days before the examination is scheduled. Upon approval, the MIE Graduate Studies Office will issue the examination announcement.
All departmental examinations are open to the public, unless requested otherwise by the student or candidate.
The presentation is followed by questions and subsequent closed-door voting. The supervisor(s) may not respond or comment on behalf of the student/candidate during the presentation and question periods.
Voting will be by written ballot, with each ballot signed. The vote is on the acceptability or unacceptability of the document and the oral defence. After every examination, the vote will be recorded by the Examination Chair in the candidate's official file and returned immediately to the MIE Graduate Studies Office.
