New MIE website to be launched soon
Prof. Dionne Aleman, with the assistance of Eric Lin, a summer student in Jean Zu's lab, has been working intensively on the construction of a new MIE website, to be launched soon. We greatly appreciate their hard work. We would also like to thank the following people in helping develop the new website: Oscar Del Rio, Shannon Osborne, Jho Nazal, Alex Boissonneau Lehner, Ryan Mendell, Jason Bazylak, and Axel Guenther. There are many other colleagues who have also provided valuable input including Kelly Coburn, Joe Baptista, Greg Jamieson, and Yu Sun.

Executive Committee Meeting
The MIE executive committee will meet on August 27th, 2009.

Farewell Party to Kelly Coburn
A farewell party will be held on Friday, August 28, 2009 to say goodbye to Kelly Coburn, Director of Administration and Finance, who will leave for a new position. Her last day at MIE will be Sept. 4th, 2009.

Name change of the Task Force on Improving Graduate Courses
Due to the expanded scope, the Task Force on improving graduate courses, led by Prof. Javad Mostaghimi, will be changed to "Task Force on Improving Graduate Studies"

International Maintenance Excellence Conference (IMEC)
The 2009 IMEC Conference, to be held in Toronto, September 9-11, is sponsored by Professor Andrew Jardine's Centre for Maintenance Optimization and Reliability Engineering (C-MORE). Bringing together some of the most noted asset management experts and successful maintenance and reliability professionals in the world, this international event is designed for those working in the area of maintenance reliability. It will offer proven solutions to real problems.

Sessions include: How Do You Manage Your Assets When They Are 200 Million Kilometers Away with David Oberhettinger, NASA/Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory; Value Driven Asset Management: Reveal the Hidden Value of Your Assets! with Guy Delahay, Managing Partner, Mainnovation; Reliability and Maintenance Best Practices: What Does Excellence Look Like and What Do Best Performers Do Better? with Christer Idhammar, Founder and Executive VP, IDCON.

IMEC offers four full-day workshops on Friday, September 11, one led by Neil Montgomery, Senior Research Associate, C-MORE, Optimizing Maintenance Decisions: A Case Study Approach.

Doctoral Thesis Completion Grant for 2009-2010
The Doctoral Thesis Completion Grant is awarded to domestic and international doctoral students who are registered full-time, paying full-time fees, and currently in their 5th or 6th year of study. Students can receive the grant in both their 5th and 6th year of study and need to apply each year.

AMIGAS Goes to CNE
Join AMIGAS (Association of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Graduate Students) for a day at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) on Saturday, September 5th. All MIE grad students (including those starting in Sept. 2009), post docs, faculty and staff are invited, along with their families or one non-family guest. To attend, please purchase one of the two special discounted ticket packages listed below:

2 - Magic pass for $30 – includes admission to fair grounds, shows, exhibits and *unlimited midway rides* and $5 in food tickets

Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) Volunteers: Gardening at Downsview Park
LOT1 On Thursday, August 13, 2009, the Summer LOT group put on gloves and went gardening in Downsview Park with a volunteer organization called Evergreen, a non-profit environmental organization that tries to make cities more livable through naturalization projects. Downsview Park is currently undergoing a greening project led by Evergreen. Once the transformation is complete, Downsview Park will be Canada's first National Urban Park. The park will also have the highest elevation in Toronto with a view of the entire city landscape.
The Downsview Stewardship program has a bi-weekly team that works on maintaining and growing the natural surroundings. The LOT group helped with clearing out dead trees, trimming the branches, and raking the path. It was a great opportunity for the students to volunteer in the community and to see the beginnings of what will be a beautiful urban getaway.

Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) Summer Social: Rock Climbing

On Thursday August 20, 2009, the summer LOT group put their athletic skills to the test with an evening of rock climbing at Toronto's Rock Oasis. The group had a few experienced climbers, but most were new to the sport. Our new climbers took the challenge in stride, learned the basics of rock climbing, and spent the night pushing themselves to reach new heights!

ASKme Campaign
Interested staff are invited to participate in the “ASKme” campaign 2009. The program helps welcome new students to the St. George campus and community. The ASKme campaign is an opportunity for any interested staff member to help new students navigate the campus. Volunteering as an ASKme ambassador is easy - and you don’t need to know all of the answers to participate.

Pick up a package containing an ASKme button, a referral card, and an FAQ sheet .
Register to be an ASKme volunteer at www.studentlife.utoronto.ca/askme.aspx so that we can get your feedback and suggestions after the campaign.
During the ASKme campaign period of August 24 – September 11, 2009, wear your button and carry your referral card when walking around the campus.

The MC-78 Machine shop has a stock inventory of many common materials, in a range of sizes. If you are thinking about a new project and need to order material, stop by the shop first, as we may already have what you need in stock. You will save shipping and handling fees, minimum order fees, and delivery time. The shop has aluminum, brass, copper, steel, and stainless steel, as well as many types of plastic materials. We also have a wide variety of fasteners, such as bolts, nuts, washer and rivets for all of your project needs.
