New U of T Voicemail System for St. George Campus
St. George campus is migrating to a new voicemail system (CallXpress) scheduled to change Saturday, February 11. All mailbox subscribers received a broadcast message about the new service on Monday January 23. Click here and here for more information.

Professor Steinman Elected ASME Fellow
Professor David A. Steinman has been elected Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME). Fellowship is the highest elected grade of membership within ASME, the attainment of which recognizes exceptional engineering achievements and contributions to the engineering profession.
Professor Steinman will receive his award at the Society's Summer Bioengineering Conference (SBC) June 20 to 23 in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. He is the Technical Program Chair of SBC 2012.
MASc Student Aaron Guan Wins First Place and $10K Scholarship at AUTO21 TestDRIVE
A new biodegradable material made from shrimp and crab shells that can replace petroleum-based plastics used in auto components helped MASc student Aaron Guan (supervisor: Hani Naguib) win the AUTO21 TestDRIVE, a national automotive competition. He receives a $10,000 scholarship for his work on recyclable, lightweight, polymeric nanocomposites. The research is being conducted by the Smart and Adaptive Materials Lab.
Two MIE Student Teams Win for "Innovative Design" at UTEK
 
At the U of T Engineering Kompetitions (UTEK) held Saturday, January 21, team members Iaroslav Jemtchoujnikov, Waleed Ishaque, and Irshad Chady won First Place for their entry entitled "Automated Snow Removal System (ASRS)". Team members Chun Teng Kua, Fady Salib, John Nguyen, and Eu Jin Ooi received Second Place and the Proficiency Award for their entry entitled "Portable Medical Assistance Computer (PMAC)".
The designs were developed for the MIE Capstone Design and are being completed through the Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) Connections Program, with supervision by Professors William L. Cleghorn and James K. Mills.The two teams will now enter their designs at the Ontario Engineering Competition (OEC) during February. Read more

Professor Meguid Joins "Acta Mechanica" Advisory Board
Professor Shaker A. Meguid has accepted an invitation to join the Advisory Board the journal "Acta Mechanica" (Springer) for a 3-year term (February 2012 – January 2015). Since 1965, "Acta Mechanica" has been a leading journal in theoretical and applied mechanics.

Professor Shaker A. Meguid will be giving an invited talk in the Aerospace Engineering Department at Rutgers University on Wednesday, February 15 entitled "Multifunctional Nanocomposites: Trends and Prospects". He will also give another invited talk in the Mechanical Engineering Department of the City College of New York (CUNY) on Thursday, February 16, 2012 entitled "Nano-Tailored Aerospace Composites for Self-Health Monitoring of Damage".
Professor Sinclair » Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB)
Professor Tony Sinclair will be at McMaster University in Hamilton, February 5-7. He is vice-chair of a Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) team evaluating the Mechatronics Engineering program.

The Skule™ Engineering Competitions (SEC 2012)
 The Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering is proud to sponsor The Skule™ Engineering Competitions (SEC 2012) held on Saturday, January 28. The event included design, consulting, oral and technical poster competitions and was open to all students from Engineering. The day is organized by the University of Toronto student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME). More than 100 students took part with 7 design entries and 8 consulting entries. This event will be a milestone event, as the largest competition next to U of T Engineering Kompetitions (UTEK).
Mechanical Engineering Techniques Summer Program for Engineering Students
George Brown College and U of T are presenting a 14-week intensive summer internship program to develop hands-on technical skills. The Operations Research Challenge (TORCH) for High School Students
On Saturday, March 17, students from area high schools will participate in the 2nd annual Operations Research Challenge, a one-day contest organized by the TIDEL group (Professor Chris Beck). The contest's goal is to educate and interest students in operations research, a field of study that through the use of techniques from engineering, computer science and mathematics, aims to understand and solve complex decision-making problems. Teams of 3-4 students will test their abilities to make good decisions in a variety of situations.
The competition will be followed by a 30-minute "Introduction to Operations Research" lecture by Professor Timothy Chan, a discussion of the solutions and an awards ceremony. If you know a high school student who might be interested, please encourage him/her to check-out the contest's website. If you have questions contact ORChallenge@mie.utoronto.ca.
The event is supported by the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, AMIGAS and UTORG.
