MIE Undergraduate Design Facilities

The objective of the Undergraduate Design Facilities (UDF) is to provide students with a safe and useful space in which to work on design projects. In addition to equipment resources students are given training in general workshop safety and proper tool use. Whether they need to realize a fully functional mechatronic device or simply meet to discuss deadlines with their teammates, the UDF is there both as a learning experience and a valuable resource.

The Undergraduate Design Facilities (UDF) are made up of two locations, the Undergraduate Design Workshop (UDW) and the Undergraduate Design Studio (UDS).

Undergraduate Design Workshop

Location: Basement (pdf - valid on campus only) of the Mining Building- Room 71, St. George Campus, University of Toronto

Capacity: Varies depending on the size of projects being worked on

The UDW is a space for undergraduate student to "get their hands dirty" and construct prototypes and proof-of-concept models. It is equipped with a selection of manual and power tools, but more importantly students have access to safe tool-use training and supervised work times. The goal is to provide a surrounding where students can get comfortable with tool use, gain valuable hands-on experience building prototypes and models, and learn safe practices in a construction or industrial environment. The primary materials worked on in the UDW are wood, plastic, and foam. Extensive metal work should be done in the Student Machine Shop.

Students interested in using this space must get permission from their instructor/advisor, complete the Online Health and Safety Training Course, and the Hands-on Site Training.

Instructors or supervisors interested in booking access to this facility for their students should contact the UDF Supervisor.

Additionally there are almost 100 lockers located in the hallway outside the room for use by student design teams.

Undergraduate Design Studio

Location: First Floor (pdf - valid on campus only) of the Mining Building - Room 123, St. George Campus, University of Toronto

Capacity: 60 students

The UDS is a space for undergraduate student design teams to gather in a classroom flexible enough to accommodate the needs of a group of design teams. It is equipped with movable tables, chairs and dividers; 8 movable easel white boards; 3 computers; 2 printers (one large scale and colour); and a large scale scanner. Additionally the room contains over 100 lockers for use by student design teams.

This space is intended for use in design team meetings and planning work. It is NOT intended for construction work. For space to construct your prototype see the UDW.

When this room is not booked for other activities it is available for the use of MIE undergraduate students for group work.

Students interested in booking this facility for design-related activies should contact their course instructor or faculty advisor.

Instructors interested in booking access to this facility for their students should contact the UDF Supervisor.
