Application Instructions
Before you start, please ensure that you meet the minimum admission requirements.
Applicants must apply on two online systems:
- the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) system
- the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) system
Once you've applied on both systems, then refer to the SGS system to check the status of your application.
STEP 1: On the SGS application system:
- submit an application and pay the application fee (which is non-refundable/transferrable, regardless of the circumstances).
- email or fax your SGS Application Mailing Sheet to the MIE Graduate Office.
- scan and upload each official post-secondary institutional transcript as a pdf file. Every transcript must include its respective grading scale. Scan transcripts in grayscale at 72 dpi (the lowest dpi setting). The file size of each scanned transcript must not exceed 3 Mb.
- if prompted, enter your English language proficiency test score.
STEP 2: On the MIE admission system:
- provide contact information for two (2) referees. Email addresses must be institution-based (i.e. no gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc.). The MIE admission system will contact each referee to upload their reference. Referees must upload their references via institution servers.
- upload your resume/c.v.
- write a statement of intent.
- if applicable, enter your English language proficiency test scores.
STEP 3: Documents:
- If you entered an English language proficiency test score, then arrange to have the testing service (TOEFL, IELTS, etc.) send us the results. Note: TOEFL Institution Code: 0982; Department Code: 68
- Please wait for further instructions before submitting your official paper transcripts. The application review process will begin with your scanned transcripts alone, but you may be asked to submit a paper transcript before an admission decision is finalized.
- Documents should be sent to:

What happens once you've applied?
Your application is complete when you've entered all required information on the two application systems, when your referees have provided references, and if applicable, when we've received official notice of your English language proficiency test score.
If you've applied to the M.Eng. program, we review those applications on an on-going basis.
If you've applied to the M.A.Sc. or Ph.D. programs, then once your application is complete, it becomes available for review by professors within the Department of MIE, and remains so for the duration of the application period. Admission into the M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. programs is extremely competitive: we only offer admission to a small fraction of applicants, because these students must be funded, either by external scholarships or by a professor's research funds. As a result, M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. applicants are strongly encouraged to contact professors with whom they would like to work, either before or after submitting an application. Without funding, we cannot offer admission.
